Classical Painting Class
Available spots
Service Description
This four-session classical painting course is for artists of any experience, specifically for anyone who would like to learn about painting realistic light and shadow with oil paint. Each artist will be given a random and unique reference photo of either a human skull or a goat skull, with different light sources in each image. By giving each artist a randomly selected reference image, the goal is to make sure this is a fun learning experience, without feeling competitive and repetitive. Over the weekly sessions we'll cover the entire process of creating a painting, from the beginning greyscale sketch of the under painting, to blocking in color with oils, to the classical technique of transparent glazing to add more depth and realism to your painting. Additionally, you'll learn about preparing the surface of a canvas or panel, composition of the image, charcoal sketching, how to create convincing realism with lighting, opaque vs transparent oil paint and what quality paints to acquire, using acrylic as a preliminary medium, types of brushes to use, framing finished artwork, photographing your pieces and how to market them to the public. If you're interested in learning a new medium for self-expression or hoping to improve your painting skills, this class will give you insights into the classical old master style of painters like Caravaggio, Rubens and Rembrandt. I love to paint and teaching is my way of preserving and passing the classical torch, especially in the ever changing artificial world. All materials will be provided for you to make your own oil painting, you will only need to bring your artistic curiosity! (if you'd prefer to bring your own tabletop easel feel free, an apron or artist smock is also recommended as paint can be messy!) This four week course is on Mondays, (June 9th, June 16th, June 23rd and June 30th) from 6pm-9:30pm. Snacks and beverages like coffee, water and soda will be available too! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out in the contacts section.
